Dear JAMMers,
Halloween is right around the corner. And I have a confession: it’s never been my favorite holiday. Probably because I’m eager to fast forward right to Christmas. But there are few memories that stand out every year when Halloween rolls back around and I figured I would share them with the class.
(2002) Crazy Hat Day: Every year, my elementary school had a “Crazy Hat Day” on or around Halloween where students would come in wearing the wackiest hat they could make at home. And people would get super creative with it. But not my house. As usual, we were scrambling at the last minute and the best my mom came up with was an orange bucket with chocolate lollipops taped around it. But it gets worse. If that wasn’t bad enough, it was sunny as hell that day and the parade was outside. So as we paraded around the schoolyard, the chocolate began melting. Thank GOD they were wrapped in plastic, so the chocolate didn’t drip down my face. Instead, I was walking around with pools of chocolate-filled Saran wrap sagging from my head. Sure, it was a little embarrassing, but I was even more bummed that I could no longer eat the chocolate.
(2013) Harry Potter: Fast forward to college. My friends and I bought tickets for a Halloween event at a nearby lounge. A perk of the ticket was that it included transportation, so a yellow school bus (fancy, I know) came to pick us up right outside of campus. During the ride to the bar, a fight randomly broke out in the back of the bus. It sounded like things were getting physical, and when I looked back to see what was going on, a guy dressed in a full Harry Potter costume opened up the emergency exit door in the back and jumped out of the bus. In the middle of the street. All I saw was his black cloak blow in the wind as he escaped. It’s one of my favorite memories ever.
(2018) Mini Minnie Mouse: A special memory that means a lot to me took place on Halloween in 2018, when I went trick-or-treating with my niece, who was just 1 year old at the time. She had just begun walking about a month prior, so I still wasn’t completely used to the fact that she was mobile. When I arrived at the house, I got out of my car and saw my niece in the distance, wearing her precious Minnie Mouse costume. I didn’t think she could even see me, but she quickly spotted me down the block…and instantly started running toward me. With her Minnie ears flopping and her little legs working overtime, she had the biggest smile on her face as she was huffing and puffing toward me. That was the first time she ran to me for a hug, and I’ll never forget it.
Let’s see what this Halloween brings.
Everything’s fine,
Nicole
