6 Christmas Songs And What They Remind Me Of

Dear JAMMers,

Christmas is my favorite time of year for many reasons - one of them being the music. Like the holiday itself, Christmas music is filled with nostalgia and each song brings about a memory or a feeling…For better or for worse.

Here are 6 iconic Christmas songs and what I think about when I hear them:

All I Want For Christmas Is You: Starting off with the most legendary, of course. When I was growing up, my aunt had Mariah Carey’s holiday album in her car and we would listen to this song all year round. I specifically remember when we’d get to the second verse, we never remembered the words, so we would just hum our way through it until the chorus came back around. I think of her every time I hear it.
Santa Baby: This song just makes me uncomfortable.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town (Bruce Springsteen version) My mom, a big Bruce fan, loves this song and always told me that Santa Claus can be heard at the end of the song shouting, “Ho, ho, ho,” as he flies over the band on his sleigh. And now, she tells her grandkids the same thing.
The Little Drummer Boy: I unfortunately think about Justin Bieber’s version of this song and how he raps in it. If you haven’t heard it, go listen. If I’ve had to hear it, so do you.
Jingle Bell Rock: Two obvious words: Mean Girls. I wonder how the original creators of the song would feel about millennials associating their pride and joy with the most ridiculous and hilarious movie scene of the 2000s.
12 Days Of Christmas: Every year, my dad’s side of my family has a big Christmas party where we do a sing-along to this song. Each table is one of the 12 days, and we go around the room competing to see who sings their line the best. Last year, my table was “Four Calling Birds,” and I think we nailed it.
