Dear JAMMers,
August is here and that can only mean one thing: the Summer Scaries.
June and July flew by leaving us with just four more weeks of beach days, frozen drinks and summer Fridays. But just when I’m ready to buckle down and make the most of what’s left, it seems like the rest of the world is already moving on. Back to school supplies, Halloween decorations…August 1st can hit you hard, but there is one upside to the month that has flooded my social media feed (and my own brain) the moment the clock struck midnight last Wednesday: Taylor Swift’s song “August.”
On August 1st, Swifties posted the now iconic song all over their Stories with the caption, “Happy August to those who celebrate!” HAPPY August? Since when? Since Taylor Swift, obvi. Taylor has saved many industries: the music industry, the NFL, the cat industry (is that what it’s called?) but only blondie has the power to write a song that saves an entire month.
Taylor’s song “August” has become a fan favorite for many reasons. It’s the eighth track on her Grammy-award winning album Folklore (Eighth…because August is the eighth month of the year…ugh her brain) The song tells one side of the love triangle between characters Betty, James and Augustine - three fictional characters that make up the album’s lore. The song is filled with some of her most memorable lyrics and one of the catchiest melodies that will be stuck in your head all month long. But most of all, people love it simply because it’s just a vibe.
If you close your eyes and listen to “August”, you feel like you’re on a pier looking out onto a lake hearing the birds chirp (and if you’re me, maybe getting a bug bite or two). It’s about young love, making the listener nostalgic for the days in high school when summer felt like an eternity. It paints a perfect picture of those late summer days and instantly lowers your blood pressure.
So when you’re starting to feel the Summer Scaries this month, just do what every millennial woman does: play Taylor Swift. Because there’s truly a Taylor Swift song for everything.
Happy August to those who celebrate! And be sure to make the most of August…before it slips away into a moment in time.
Everything's fine,
Nicole
